This exciting event has had tremendous support from the Sports Council for Northern Ireland, Belfast City Council and the Feile as one of the opening events for the West Belfast Festival.

Pauline Canavan Chief Executive SCA stated, “Sport breaks down barriers! SCA’s Race Against Racism provides an opportunity for you and your family and friends, School, club and club members to have fun and collectively we will make a statement that Racism is unacceptable”.

SCA take their Action Against Racism Campaign into School.

Mr Gerry Donnelly, General Manager of SCA Ltd talks to a primary seven class in Edenbrook Primary School Tennent Street about racism in the community.

SCA are running a competition among primary seven children at a number of primary schools across the city asking them to design a poster for their ‘Action Against Racism’ campaign.Accompanying Gerry was Mr Floven Dairo of the Filipino community who talked a little about his own experiences since coming to Belfast.

SCA are aware of the increase in Ethnic groups moving to the province and Belfast in particular, and the growth in racial discrimination and racial attacks. In response to this we organised a very successful Race and Integration Conference for West Belfast in Springvale Training Centre in April 2004 and following this conference and widespread consultations we released a conference report.
This report highlighted the problem of racism within our community and the need for a coordinated and sustained approach to tackling the issues.
The report highlighted four main areas where action was needed, Public Safety, Housing, Employment and Education.
SCA are working with many minority ethnic groups and community groups to tackle these issues and to highlight the need for further support and involvement.

One very strong message that came from our conference, Mr Donnelly said, was “There is no room for complacency”.
We must act now and we must act together, the minority ethnic groups and the wider community, to ensure equality for all and that the scourge of racism and discrimination is eradicated from our society. It has been proven time and again that an inclusive society is a more prosperous and vibrant society.

We are running another city wide conference later in the year which we hope will be as successful and well supported as our last and further assist in introducing a consolidated approach to tackling t racism and the associated issues.
